Brief description:

UBC’s International Scholars Program offers four categories of prestigious need-and-merit-based awards to international students:

The Karen McKellen International Leader of Tomorrow Award recognizes outstanding potential international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement and exemplary leadership skills that support and empower others through collaboration, empathy and active listening.

Donald A. The Wehrung International Student Award recognizes outstanding international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas who have achieved academic excellence under challenging circumstances and who would be unable to attend university without significant financial support.

The International Impact Award is given to exceptional students who have demonstrated leadership as well as commitment and solutions to sustainability and climate change, natural resource conservation and management, social justice, equity and inclusion, or social health and well-being. Preference is given to first generation students and those from diverse living backgrounds.

The Vantage One Excellence Award is offered by UBC Vantage College to academically outstanding international students who do not yet meet the English language admission standards for direct admission to UBC.

Scholarship value/inclusions/duration:

The value of the UBC International Scholars Program is proportional to your financial need. Financial need is determined by adding up tuition, fees and living expenses and subtracting the financial contribution you and your family can make each year. A standard needs assessment is based on financial information provided by you and your family.

Your award can be renewed for an additional three years of graduate study or degree completion – whichever comes first – if you achieve satisfactory academic standing in your faculty, continue to demonstrate financial need and maintain your Canadian study permit (student visa).

Eligibility:

To be considered for the International Scholars Program:

You must be an international student studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit.
You must enter UBC from an accredited secondary school, or transfer from your first year at a post-secondary college or another university.
You must have graduated from high school no later than June two years prior to the academic year in which you are applying. For example, applicants for the 2024 winter session must graduate from high school before November 2022.
You must apply for your first bachelor’s degree.
You must demonstrate high academic achievement (achieve all or equivalent standards).
You must demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent you from obtaining a UBC degree.
You must meet UBC’s admissions requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and English language admissions criteria.

Applicants will be considered for the Vantage One Excellence Award if:

All previous eligibility criteria apply, except that you do not yet have to meet UBC’s English language admissions standards for direct admission to UBC.
You must meet the UBC Vantage College admissions requirements, including Vantage College’s English requirements.
You must be coming straight from high school
You must be starting your undergraduate studies at UBC in the UBC Vantage One program.

Application instructions:

To apply for the International Scholars Program, you must be nominated by your school or nonprofit and submit a reference from an academic referee. Make sure your school or nonprofit is able to nominate you, and let your nominator and academic referee know you want to apply for the International Scholar Program. You do not select which award you would like to receive when you submit your application – UBC will automatically consider you for the awards for which you are eligible.

Apply for the International Scholars Program by submitting an application by November 15 and submit your application for admission to UBC by December 1. You must meet the UBC English language admission requirements by January 31.
